Not All Protein Bars Are Healthy. Here’s How to Tell

June 06, 2026

Protein bars have become the snack everyone keeps within reach. They’re easy to toss in your bag, eat after a workout or grab when you’re short on time.

But a closer look at the nutrition label can be surprising. Some are packed with protein and fiber. Others are closer to a candy bar.

“Protein bars can absolutely be part of a healthy diet, but it’s important to read the label,” says Katie Gustavesen, RD, registered dietitian with Hartford HealthCare. “Some are well-balanced snacks, while others are more like dessert.”

If you’re trying to find the best protein bar, here’s what to look for.

Look for at least 10 grams of protein

It might sound obvious, but not every protein bar actually contains much protein.

“A good rule of thumb is to look for at least 10 grams of protein,” Gustavesen says. “Protein helps keep you full longer and supports muscle repair, especially if you’re eating the bar after a workout.”

If you’re comparing options at the store, protein content is one of the easiest ways to narrow down the best protein bar for your needs.

The type of protein matters too. Many bars use whey, soy, pea or brown rice protein. All can be effective, though some people may tolerate certain types better than others.

Pick a protein bar with less added sugar

Some protein bars contain as much added sugar as a dessert.

“If a bar has 15 or 20 grams of sugar, it’s probably closer to a candy bar than a healthy snack,” Gustavesen says.

When choosing the best protein bar, try to look for options with little or no added sugar. Ingredients like honey, syrups and cane sugar can add up quickly.

A bar with fiber keeps you fuller, longer

Protein isn’t the only nutrient that helps keep you satisfied. Fiber plays an important role, too.

“Fiber slows digestion and help prevent blood sugar spikes,” Gustavesen says. “When a bar includes both protein and fiber, it tends to keep you full longer.”

For many people, the best protein bar will include a few grams of fiber along with protein to make it a more balanced snack.

Read the ingredient list before you buy

Choose protein bars with a short, recognizable list of ingredients. Whole-foods and minimal artificial sweeteners are good to look for.

“Whole foods like nuts, seeds, oats and dried fruit are usually good signs,” says Gustavesen.

Some bars also include sugar alcohols, which are often used to reduce sugar content. While they’re considered safe, they can cause bloating or stomach discomfort for some people.

Use protein bars as a snack, not a meal

Even the best protein bar shouldn’t replace balanced meals.

“A protein bar can be helpful when you’re on the go or need something quick between meals,” Gustavesen says. “But whole foods like yogurt, eggs, nuts or fruit usually provide more overall nutrition.”

Protein bars work best as a convenient snack, not a daily substitute for real meals.
